K-9: Adorable Heroes of Their Communities

Today, we’re talking about some K-9s who have earned a very special place in the hearts of their communities.
Gael: The Officer Who Had Everyone Looking for Him
Gael is a young K-9 officer with the Miami Gardens Police Department. He has beige fur, brown eyes, and a sweet, good-natured face. But don’t let that adorable face fool you: behind it is an officer specially trained to find firearms.
On the night of September 7, while officers were responding to an alarm at a business near NW 195th Street and NW 2nd Avenue, Gael ran out of the police vehicle when his companion opened the rear door. He crossed NW 2nd Avenue heading east without responding to the officer’s commands.
A security camera captured the moment Gael was struck by a vehicle. Despite the impact, he kept running east.
The search brought together Miami Gardens Police Department units and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office aviation team. The community was also asked to help. Gael was eventually found safe in Hollywood.
After such an ordeal, Gael returned to his unit, turning those days into nothing more than a bad memory.
Ace: An Officer Who Refused to Give Up
Another story that kept the community on edge was about brave Ace, a K-9 officer with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
During an operation in August, Ace followed the trail of a fugitive into a wooded area and located him hiding inside a tent. When officers ordered him to come out, the man opened fire from inside.
Ace was hit by a bullet that entered his chest and traveled to his left front leg, causing severe injuries.
Because of the severity of his wounds, Ace was transported by helicopter to a specialized veterinary center in Lakewood Ranch. It was the first emergency air transport of a K-9 carried out by Tampa General’s Aeromed service.
After surgery, his left front leg had to be amputated. But Ace didn’t seem willing to give up. He began walking on three legs and, just a few days later, was medically cleared to leave.
When he finally left the hospital, some of the people who had helped save his life were there, celebrating his recovery.
Then we saw him at the theater. The audience erupted in applause when the moment of his presentation arrived. Ace responded to all that affection and respect with a happy bark.
Rocky: The Officer Who Returned to Duty
This next story moved us to tears. Meet Rocky, a K-9 officer with the U.S. Marshals Service.
In January 2025, Rocky was taking part in the search for a fugitive in Houston when he located his hiding place: a dumpster.
Without thinking twice, Rocky climbed into the dumpster to confront him. The fugitive fired several times, and Rocky fell wounded.
The officers reacted immediately, managed to capture him, and called for help. When the helicopter arrived, several officers ran with Rocky in their arms to get him to a veterinary hospital for emergency treatment. Many of us still remember that image; seeing it in the media broke our hearts.
Rocky was rushed to a veterinary hospital, where he underwent surgery. Fortunately, the bullets had passed very close to vital organs without hitting them.
After a few days of recovery, he returned to his fellow officers. With rest, rehabilitation, and training, he was back on duty just a few weeks later.
His bravery also earned him recognition. In 2025, he became the first K-9 to receive the Johnny Klevenhagen Award for heroism in law enforcement. In February 2026, Rocky and Deputy U.S. Marshal Andy Deacon received the Purple Heart from the U.S. Marshals Service.
Tell me you’re not proud of these heroes.
Bonus
Today, three of our heroes are waiting to be decorated. On November 13, Ace, Appie, and Havoc will come together to receive the Courage Under Fire Award, an honor from the Space Coast Police K-9 Foundation recognizing K-9 officers who survived gunshot wounds in the line of duty.
